Terra Cotta is a natural Material which is refined to remove impurities and strengthen with added ingredients.  It is naturally absorbent and will hold moisture that assists plants growth.  These characteristics make terra cotta attractive to the growth of algae and moss.  Some find this an attractive feature of clay products.  Terra cotta can be cleaned with various cleansing agents and a strong brush.  Because terra cotta absorbs moisture, they will freeze and crack in areas where temperatures fall far below freezing.  If pots can not be moved to a shelter for the winter months, they should be covered to protect against snow and moisture.  Quality varies greatly in clay products.  The highly refined clay, with strengthening ingredients, fired at a high temperature is generally the best quality and will last for a longer time.  Most terra cotta sold in the United States is produced in foreign countries, therefore sizes vary greatly. 

Fiberglass is reinforced polyester resin and gel coat, stain, rust and tarnish resistant.  These containers are temperature stable, able to with stand extremes of heat or cold.
